South Beats North in All Star Game

AllStars2015 3After three postponements due to very rainy weather, the 2015 Howie Osterer Junior League All Star Game was played Tuesday December 27 at the Baptist Village in Petah Tikvah. Team North had representatives from Misgav, Tel Aviv, Ra'anana, and Tel Mond. The team South was comprised of players from Jerusalem, Modiin, and Bet Shemesh. The teams were managed by the head coach of the team placed first in each division at the end of the fall season.

The South got the scoring started early with an RBI double by Jerusalem's Michael Goldberg. The North tied the game at 1 in the bottom of the 1st inning. But over the next innings, the South pulled away with the game with more extra base hits from Noam Wine of Modiin and Avi Alter of Bet Shemesh. The South's hitting was backed up by a strong pitching performance from Ari Rosenbaum, also from Bet Shemesh, who had 5 strike outs in 2 innings of work. Team North was able to scrap 2 more runs in the final inning of the game, but it was not enough.Team South won the game by a final score of 12-3.

The family of Ezra Schwartz was in attendance. Ezra was killed last month in a terrorist attack while on a gap year program in Bet Shemesh. He had played four years of high school baseball and planned on playing in the IAB's premier league this spring. IAB president Peter Kurz and Ari Schwartz, Ezra's father, spoke before the game about Ezra's love of baseball and the plans to build a field in Ra'anana dedicated to Ezra.

Derrek Lee, former MLB Great, Visits the Israel Baseball Academy practice

Derrek Lee

Derrek Lee, former Miami Marlins and Chicago Cubs great, visited the Israel Baseball Academy practice Thursday, December 24 to meet our Academy players. He answered questions about his experience as a former first round draft pick, World Series Champion, and 2005 MVP candidate in the National League. Lee, pictured on the right fourth from left in the back row, spent two hours speaking with the group and giving advice during batting practice on the field. Lee was in Israel on a personal family trip.

A big thank you to Play Gobal, our partners in several Israel Baseball programs, for helping organize the visit. Play Global, along with help of Lee and Jimmy Rollins, Philadelphia Phillies and LA Dodgers short stop, recently built batting cages in Uganda, and are becoming more involved in Israel Baseball and international baseball development in general.

"It was a great experience for our kids to get to meet Mr. Lee., and we are glad to welcome him to the Israel Baseball family," said Nate Fish, Academy co-director, about the visit.

Baseball for All Runs its Final 2015 Session

Clip

The third and final session of Baseball for All (Baseball Le’Kulam) for 2015 was held on Thursday and Friday December 3-4 at the Baptist Village in Petah Tikvah. The final session was attended by 25 7th graders from Modiin and Ramle, as well as a staff of 10.

This session marked the end of the pilot year of this unique program, which brings Jewish and Arab kids in Israel together to learn and play baseball. Baseball for All was developed by the Israel Association of Baseball and the Play Global non-profit organization, which teaches baseball to coaches and youth in developing countries and areas of conflict.

In addition to the three session held at the Baptist Village in March, June and December, there were also two Family Nights that were held between the sessions - one at Kibbutz Gezer and one in Ramle.

The results of this program were all positive. “The participants were excited to come back to each session,” says Nate Fish, National Team Head Coach and one of the founders of the program.  “Our aim was to get them to meet kids from other cultures simply by playing the sport of baseball together, and this is what they did and what they’ve been enjoying.”

Most of the participants have chosen to continue playing baseball outside of the program, with the kids from Modiin joining the local league there and the players from Ramle starting up a team that will be practicing weekly and will be part of the national league.

“With this program, we have taken the first step on our way to expanding baseball to all areas of Israel, to expose kids who would normally not come into contact with the sport and to create a fun environment in which they can meet new friends who they would normally not have the opportunity to spend time with,” says Peter Kurz, President of the IAB. "This is the IAB's modest but genuine contribution to coexistence in Israel."

The program will continue in 2016.

Josh Scharff – Our Masa Israel Baseball Experience Pioneer

JoshS 1The landscape of Israel baseball has been altered over the past few months. St. Louis native Josh Scharff, can now be found at the center of all activities at any time of the day or night in a variety of locations, sharing his vast baseball experience with players of all ages. Josh is a pioneer – he is the first participant in the Masa Israel Sports Initiative – the Israel Baseball Experience - being launched, in partnership with Destination Israel. He is the advance guard of young American players who seek to extend their baseball playing experience beyond college and spend a gap year in Israel working with the Israel Association of Baseball.

Josh told us more about himself and his experience so far.

Who is Josh Scharff?

I was born 25 years ago in St. Louis, Missouri and grew up there. My parents still live there, and I have one sister who lives in Washington, DC. I studied at Yale and played baseball there for all four years – not many people are aware of Yale’s sports teams, but there’s been a Yale baseball team for the past 150 years. As a player, I go anywhere a left handed player can – DH, first base, outfield, pitcher.

After I finished college in 2013, I came to Israel for a few months and volunteered at an elementary school in Netanya. I then went back to the US and worked in Boston for The David Project, an advocacy group focused on college campuses.

How did you come to be the first Israel Baseball Experience participant?

When I was in Israel, I “caught the bug” and I really wanted to come back. My heart was really in it. I looked for ways to get back to Israel, and reached out to Nate Fish, Head National Team Coach for the IAB. He told me about the initiative, and the Destination Israel people invited me to be the pioneer. All I would think was “where do I sign?” This was the perfect marriage of the two things I love – baseball and being in Israel. I arrived back in Israel at the end of August.

What have you been doing over the past few months?

I work on baseball every day. I work with little league teams, I am a coach for the Israel Baseball Academy, I train the baseball players who are serving in the IDF’s sports program, I coach the Jerusalem Premier League team, I run school outreach programs with Nate, and I do some umpiring.

What has been the highlight so far?

Coming back to baseball has been a highlight. I spent two years out of the game and I didn’t think I’d get to play again. Now that I’m back, I see it’s just as great as it ever was. I get the opportunity to work with people from ages 8-20. I get to see them succeed and the joy it brings them. I can see my own successes reflected in them, and I get to relive those special moments of doing something for the first time in baseball like catching a pop fly or making a great hit. It’s a great feeling to give back to a non-profit organization that combines Israel and baseball.JoshS 2

What are the “Israel moments” that stand out in your mind?

The relationship between coach and player is very different here. In the US, we are taught to respect our elders and our coaches, no matter what, and we do. Here, kids constantly question authority. I didn’t expect to have a 9-year-old telling me that I don’t know what I’m talking about! But once they see that you know what you are doing and have expertise, then they will respect you – it’s earned.

I also love the fact that like everywhere, players will yell encouragement from the dugout. Only here, you hear lots of “yallas”.

How do you see your Israel baseball future?

I plan to carry on being part of this initiative as it grows in the coming months. We’re expecting around 10 Masa participants in January who will all be doing what I’ve been doing. Together we will continue to raise the level of baseball in Israel and work in areas that usually aren’t exposed to such a professional level of baseball.

Baseball in Israel doesn’t have the same culture that exists in the US. There aren’t too many kids who have their favorite Major League players and can rattle off their stats. The more players we have who are like this, the more we will be able to change the core of the game in Israel. This is something we can help with moving forward.
